QVHHL Update December 6th, 2021

Another weekend of hockey with five games played and we saw all of these games close....with three of them one goal victories. On Friday evening the Grenfell Spitfires scored twice early in the third period and took a two goal lead and held on for a 5-4 victory over the Odessa/Vibank Bruins. Jayden Issac, Mark Schneider, Lane Harbor on the power play, Kale Haylock on the power play and Sanford King with what would be the game winning goal scored for Grenfell. Allen Kilback had four assists for the Spitfires. For the Bruins Kyle Stroh scored twice inccluding a power play goal to lead the way. Justin Schaeffer and Zak Zborosky with a short handed goal also scored for the Bruins. Benji Taypotat picked up the win in the Grenfell net. Shane Bloomquist was in the Bruins net. The Spitfires had five minor penalties and the Bruins also had five minor penalties. Also on Friday evening the Balcarres Broncs scored four times in the first period and cruised to a 7-4 victory over the Southey Marlins. Corey Kosloski Justin Bernhardt each had two goals for the Broncs to lead the way. Kosloski had a short handed goal and Bernhardt had a power play goal in those totals. Cody Ellingson, Brayden Frank and Paul Albers with a power play goal also scored for the Broncs. Southey scoring came from Pat Thompson-Gale, Landon Walters, Jake Tesorowski and Arthur Miller. Southey had five minor penalties and two misconducts called on them and the Broncs had two minor penalties. Dean Brothen picked up the win in the Broncs net and both Landin Moldenhauer and Kevin Orthner had time in the Southey net.

On Saturday evening the Milestone Flyers scored twice in the first period and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Bethune Bulldogs. Cody Hegion and Morgan Gallais scored for the Flyers and Jaxon Debert scored for the Bulldogs in the second period. Thomas Spence picked up the win in the Milestone net and Duncan Paddock was in the Bethune net. The Bulldogs had four minor penalties, all taken in the third period, and a match penalty. The Flyers had seven minor penalties called on them. In Balcarres, the Broncs as they did the night before in Southey took a huge lead on the Lumsden Monarchs with six goals in the first period. That would be all the scoring from Balcarres as the Monarchs would cut into that lead with one goal in the first, one goal in the second period and three more in the third period and the Broncs held on for a 6-5 victory over the Monarchs. Corey Kosloski had two goals including a power play goal and Cody Ellingson had two goals to lead the way for the Broncs. Paul Albers and Tyler Bell with what would turn out to be the winning goal also scored for Balcarres. Kyle Johnson scored the first four goals for the Monarchs and Tyler Lees scored his third goal of the year for the Monarchs. David Spooner picked up the win for the Broncs and Dawson MacCauley was in net for the Monarchs. The Broncs had just one minor penalty and the Monarchs had four minor penalties and a double minor call.

Our final game of the weekend had the Odeesa/Vibank Bruins defeat the Southey Marlins 5-3 in Southey. The difference in this game just might have been the two short handed goals scored by the Bruins in the first period by Taylor Schmidt and Eamon Milligan. Kyle Stroh scored the first of his two goals on the evening and the Bruins had a 3-2 lead going into the second period. Marshall Wilton would score in the second period to put the Bruins up 4-2. In the third period the Marlins would score early to get within one on a goal from Derek Frater but Stroh's second goal late in the period would make the final 5-3. Mason Mullaney and Arthur Miller would also score for the Marlins. Shane Bloomquist picked up the win in the Bruins net. Landin Moldenhauer was in net for the Marlins. Southey took three minor penalties and had a misconduct. The Bruins took five minor penalties, a major and had a game misconduct,

A lot of players moved around at the beginning of the year simply beacuse we had three teams take a leave of absence and they needed a new team to play with. Their presence is quite noticable on differenr teams...now...and everyone seems comfortable as our stats start to form for the year. Corey Kosloski from the Balcarres Broncs leads the scoring race with 9 goals and 6 assists and 15 points in five games played. Kyle Johnson from the Monarchs is next with 8 goals and 4 assists in four games played. Rounding out the top five are Eamon Milligan and Kyle Stroh from the Bruins with 11 points each. Also tied with them are Arthur Miller from Southey and Allen Kilback from the Spitfires. Kayle Haylock from the Spitfires leads all scorers with three power play goals.Mitch Kilgore leads all goalies with a 2.00 gaa in two games played. Thomas Spence from Milestone and Dean Brothen from Balcarres lead all goalies with three wins each and Dawson MacCauley from the Monarchs leads all goalies with 300 minutes played.

There now has been 746 minutes of penalties in just 18 games played....the Balcarres Broncs are the least penalized team in the league and average 11.2 minutes per game. The best penalty killing unit is also from Balcarres clicking at a 82.4% success rate.  The lowest are the Southey Marlins at 54.5%. The Marlins have also allowed the most short handed goals with four. The top power play belongs to the Grenfell Spitfires at 50%. The Lumsden Monarchs are next ar 33.3% followed by Milestone at 31.6%. The Bruins have the lowest success rate at 17.9%. An interesting stat sees that in 18 games played the team that scores first has won 14 of the 18 games played. Also home teams are 10-8-0 so far this year and visiting teams are 8-9-1.

This Friday evening sees the Bethune Bulldogs (0-5-0) at the Grenfell Spitfires (3-1-0) at 8:30 p.m. Also on Friday evening the Milestone Flyers (4-1-0) are in Lumsden to play the Monarchs (2-3-0) at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday evening Monarchs are in Balcarres to play the Brioncs (5-0-0) for the second weekend in a row and the Bethune Bulldogs are in Odessa/Vibank to play the Bruins (3-3-1).
