What's new..... (from the office of President Gerry Tomkins)
~ Updated November 19, 2007 ~

The Wynyard Monarchs started the season this past weekend with two victories. Their first victory was 7-6 over the Semans Wheat Kings at home on Friday evening. Scoring for Wynyard were Liam Walker with 2, Mike Anderson, Travis Cuddington, Ryan Schweitzer, Ryan Peterson and Mark Peterson. Scoring for Semans were Jason Kot and Cal Filson each scoring twice with single goals coming from Josh Richardson and Jared Molnar. Devon Spencer got the win for Wynyard. On Saturday evening Wynyard traveled to Southey and defeated the Marlins 6-4. Andrew Howden scored twice for the Monarchs. Also scoring were Mark Peterson, Mike Anderson, Aaron Lindal and Liam Walker. Sean Sullivan was in net for the Monarchs. The Raymore Rockets joined Wynyard in top spot with a 6-0 win over the Lumsden Monarchs on Saturday evening in Raymore. Nathan Fischl egistered the shut out for the Rockets. Scoring for Raymore were Bryan Buitenhuis, Shane Baum, Terry Braman, Colin Herman, Kirk Degelman and Scott Degelman.

So it is only fitting that the Rockets and the Monarchs face off in Wynyard on Wednesday evening with the winner taking over top spot in the league. Game starts at 8 p.m.

It is early in the season and only the Bulldogs have not played their first game yet and they will do that on Friday in Avonlea. Top scorers in the League right now are James Ardelan from the Arrows, Cal Filson of Semans, Kellen Sillinger from Cupar and Chad Mazurak from Southey all with 6 points in 2 games. Ardelan leads the league with 6 goals. Nathan Fischl leads all goalies with a 1.00 GAA after 2 games.

We have 2 games upcoming on Friday evening. Bethune is in Avonlea and Southey will be in Lumsden. There are 3 games on Saturday evening. Wynyard will be in Bethune, Raymore travels to Cupar and Semans will be
in Southey...there is no hockey on Sunday as the entire province will only have one game in mind that day...thank you for supporting the Highway Hockey League.

Avonlea Arrows win League Championship!!!

The Avonlea Arrows have reclaimed the League Championship with a 6 – 3 victory over the 2006 Champion Southey Marlins. The Arrows have been in the League final in each of the last 3 years. They defeated the Bethune Bulldogs in 2004 and then lost to the Southey Marlins last year. The Arrows used the same tactics as the previous two years in that they finished down in the standings and came to life in the playoffs. This year they finished 5th (last year they finished 6th) and proceeded to defeat the 4th place Bulldogs, the 1st place Canucks and finished with a 3-1 series win over the 2nd place Southey Marlins.

Tonight saw the Marlins get on the board first just 43 seconds into the game on a shot by Chad Mazurak. 12 minutes later Gavin Mievre tied it up for the Arrows. Late in the 1st period Chad Mazurak scored his 2nd goal on a feed from Brett Hillier to give the visitors a 2-1 lead after one period. There was one penalty in the 1st and that was against Southey. In the 2nd period the tide changed. Just two minutes in Southey took two minor penalties and Avonlea took only a few seconds to tie the game on a goal by Ryan Pollack. The Marlins killed off the rest of the power play but just as that penalty expired Avonlea scored on a shot by Lance Kopan that looked like Ryan McGillis had stopped only to see the puck trickle in. A few minutes later Southey got a chance to get on the power play but Ryan Pollack grabbed the puck and scored a strange one that went over the goalie’s shoulder. That short handed goal put the Arrows up 4-2 with one period to go.

At the 3:49 mark of the 3rd period the Arrows got a power play goal from Lance Kopan to go up 5-2. Three minutes later Curtis Markewich scored an unassisted goal for the Marlins to make it 5-3. It gave Southey some life but a great effort by Quentin Nelson with just under 5 minutes left gave the Arrows the 3 goal lead back. The last 5 minutes actually had the most action in the game with Southey playing hard and Kenric Exner making some great stops…but it was too late and there just wasn’t another comeback for the Marlins. There were 12 minors in this game, 7 assessed to Southey and 5 to the Arrows. These two teams played each other 12 times this season in regular League play, Provincials and playoffs.

Once again we saw some great senior hockey this season and our final was no exception. Congratulations to the Marlins organization that made it to the South Provincial ‘A’ final and the League Championship this year. The number of young players that we see with this team sets up well for the Marlin’s future. To our League Champions there can be nothing but praise. The Arrows are a solid organization with good management, coaching and a very cohesive team. The fact that they have been in our final in each of the last three years shows the commitment of this team, no longer an enigma but Champions of the Highway Hockey League…Congratulations!

We still have some hockey left. The Cupar Canucks are down one game to the Kindersley Klippers in the Provincial ‘A’ final and there is no question that the Cuplex will be packed for game 2 this Sunday at 5:00. If you can be there to support the Canucks I know they would appreciate your attendance.

Our final Playoff stats will be posted shortly. Tabs for playoff scoring, HHL playoffs and Provincial results are all at the top of this page.

To the fans of the Highway Hockey League thank you for your support this season and especially thank you for the great attendance we saw at our rinks during playoffs and Provincials. To the players, we the hockey fans thank you…it was another great season of senior hockey in the HHL that we all appreciated!
