The Monarchs also play host to Rosetown in game two of their Provincial 'B' semi-final on Friday evening. if a third game is required it will be played in Rosetown on Saturday evening. The Raymore Rockets have advanced to the League final after game three was forfeited due to a lack of players available to the Semans Wheat Kings. We apologize to our fans for this happening but it was decided mutually that this would be the course of action. The league has had a few instances this year with some teams where games have been cancelled or moved due to availability of players. The league made changes to our schedule in Playoff structure this year for various reasons and this was one small part of that change. This is going to be discussed at our spring meeting and All Star windup. The Rockets had won the first two games of this series. All of our games being played in playoffs and Provincials are listed on this page. Please click on the “2011 HHL Playoff” page located under the “HHL Headlines” for playoff results. Fortunes changed this past weekend for our teams in Provincials. Three
of our teams were eliminated in overtime. On Sunday evening, the Lumsden
Monarchs played the Bredenbury Cougars. They went into the game with a
3-2 lead and early in the third period scored twice to take a 4-1 lead
in game two only to see Bredenbury bounce back with four straight goals
to put this series into overtime. The first overtime produced no scoring
but 13:42 into the second overtime period Bredenbury scored on the power
play and won the Provincial ‘C’ series 8-7. In Drake, the Southey
Marlins were holding on to a 2-1 lead late in the third period in game
three of their best of three Provincial ‘A’ series against the Drake
Canucks. Drake pulled their goalie and tied the game and then won the
series in overtime. On Monday evening the Raymore Rockets held a 3-2
lead in the third period in their third game of Provincial ‘A’ play.
Bruno tied this game late with their goalie pulled and then won in
overtime 4-3. The Bethune Bulldogs lost 7-3 to Rosetown on Saturday
evening in Provincial ‘B’ action and now Rosetown will play the Wynyard
Monarchs who defeated Unity 7-2 on Saturday evening. This best of 3
semi-final begins in Rosetown on Sunday at 1:45 in Rosetown.

February 15 The regular season is over. The final two makeup games were played in Cupar on Friday and Semans on Monday and although there was a shortage of players the games were completed. We do not expect rosters that short again this year and we apologize. We are organizing playoff series now and ask that you come back and check the playoff page as we get these games scheduled. We are attempting to complete round one by February 28th. We still have five teams in provincials and that comes into play with naturally when scheduling our playoffs. We do have everyone's first game scheduled. The first place Wynyard Rockets will open up against the eighth place Lumsden Monarchs on Friday evening in Wynyard at 8 p.m. They have game two scheduled in Lumsden on Tuesday, February 22nd at 8 p.m. The second place Raymore Rockets will open up in Bethune against the seventh place Bulldogs oon Wednesday at 8 p.m. They will play the second game of their series on Friday in Raymore at 8 p.m. The third place Semans Wheat Kings open up against the sixth place Avonlea Arrows on Thursday evening in Semans at 8 p.m. This series will resume during the week next week. The fourth place Southey Marlins open up against the Cupar Canucks on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. The series will continue during the next week. In Provincials, we have five teams still playing. The Raymore Rockets defeated Tisdale and will now face Bruno. Their first game is this series is Sunday in Bruno at 5 p.m. The Southey Marlins defeated Watrous and now face Drake who defeated the Cupar Canucks in second round play. Their first game will be Thursday, February 17th in Drake at 8:30 p.m. The second game of this series is in Southey the following Thursday. The Wynyard Monarchs took care of Biggar and now meet Unity in Provincial 'B' action. Their first game of the two game total point is this Saturday in Wynyard at 8 p.m. The second game will be the following Saturday in Unity. The Bethune Bulldogs got beat 9-1 by Rosetown this past Saturday and will play the second game on February 26th. The Lumsden Monarchs defeated Gordons and now play Bredenbury. This series has not been finalized and we will have it on the Provincial page just as soon as we get it. Barry Herman has the final season statistics completed and they will be posted this week. When they are up please peruse. One of the most interesting statistics of the year is the fact that home ice advantage was below 50% this year.....congratulations to Wheat King Jared Molnar on capturing the scoring title and leading the League in assists (34) and goals (33), the first Wheat King to capture the scoring title since Matt Sych did in 2008/09. Warren Niekamp from the Raymore Rockets led the league in GAA with a 3.41 average and quite an accomplishment considering league scoring is up almost two goals a game this year. Adam Jordan of the Wynyard Monarchs led the league in wins (13) and 2010 League MVP Justin Mrazek continues to be the Ironman with 1,087.5 minutes played. The Wynyard Monarchs led the League with the best power play. They had a 38.2% success rate which is a tremendous number. The Southey Marlins weren’t that far off with an equally impressive 35.1% success rate. All other teams except the Lumsden Monarchs were in the 20-30% success rate range this year. Is there any wonder why scoring was up? Power plays were certainly one reason. The top penalty kill unit belongs to the Avonlea Arrows at 81.2% Of course with the success of the power play units this year, penalty kill units' success were down in the 70-80% range, except the Strasbourg Maroons. The League also saw 35 shorthanded goals this year. Southey led the way with 6. The Home team record this year added up to 39-37-5 while visiting teams compiled a 42-34-5 record. February 9, 2011 Playoffs begin in the Highway Hockey League next week. With their 10-3
victory over Semans on Tuesday evening the Wynyard Monarchs will
finish first place regardless of the outcome of the Raymore Rockets
versus Semans Wheat Kings on Thursday evening. Semans has an
opportunity to finish as high as third place and will finish no worse
than sixth place.
Further to the League executive ruling on this incident, which was appealed, and then our League Commissioner’s final ruling on the use of a suspended player by the Raymore Rockets on December 11th against the Bethune Bulldogs, the SHA has determined that the Rockets will forfeit the two points they earned for that victory against Bethune. The Rockets will now finish second place as they can only tie Wynyard in the standings and the Monarchs won the season series between them. The Rockets will play the Bethune Bulldogs in the first round of playoffs. The Wynyard Monarchs will play the Monarchs from Lumsden in the first round of playoffs. The other two series will be determined this weekend. Due to Provincial series between Southey and Watrous and the series between Cupar and Drake the final two games of our regular season have not been finalized. Our intention is to have both the final regular season games, Avonlea @ Cupar and Southey @ Semans, completed by February 14th. We will post both of these games on our site as soon as Provincial game outcomes are posted. Games confirmed at this time…in League the Semans Wheat Kings visit Raymore on Thursday. In Provincials the Cupar Canucks are in Drake to play the Canucks on Wednesday evening at 8:30 pm. These two teams go at it again on Thursday evening in Cupar at 8:30 pm and if a third game is required it will be played on Friday evening in Cupar at 8:30 pm. The Southey Monarchs defeated the Watrous Winterhawks on Monday evening 5-3 and will play game two of this series in Watrous on Friday at 8:30 pm. If a third game is required it will be played Sunday in Southey at 6 pm. The Lumsden Monarchs lost their first game of a two game total point series in Provincial ‘C’ against Gordons last Saturday. These two teams meet in Lumsden at 8 pm on Friday evening. The Wynyard Monarchs defeated Biggar last Saturday 9-2 and play the second game of their Provincial ‘B’ two game total point series in Biggar on Saturday at 8 pm. The Bethune Bulldogs begin Provincial ‘B’ play on Saturday evening in Bethune against Rosetown with the game beginning at 8 pm. The Raymore Rockets lost to Tisdale last Saturday evening 8-6 in Provincial ‘A’ action. Game two of this series is in Tisdale on Saturday evening at 8 pm. If a third game is required it will be played on Sunday at 6 pm in Raymore. Final Statistics will be posted next week. A Playoff page with all four first round best of five series will be added to our site and All Star/Award nominations will be announced. All HHL game sheets are available to be viewed on our “Schedules and Scores” page by clicking on the “2010-2011 HHL Boxscores” at the top of the page and we’ll update Provincial and League results on our news page early next week. February 2, 2011 Our first round of Provincials concluded on Monday evening. The Raymore Rockets defeated the Leroy Braves 7-0 to advance to the second round against Tisdale and the Southey Marlins defeated the Nokomis Chiefs 4-3 to advance to the second round against the Watrous Winterhawks. The Winterhawks won the third game of their series against Avonlea on Friday evening 3-2. Games confirmed this weekend for members of our League include Provincial 'C' action with Lumsden @ Gordons on Saturday evening and in Provincial 'B' action Biggar is in Wynyard on Saturday evening. Provincial 'A' second round begins Saturday evening in Raymore where the Rockets host Tisdale in the first game of their best of three series. The Southey/Watrous series will be updated on our "2011 SHA Provincials" page (just click on the link under HHL Headlines on this page). Another Provincial 'A' series against the LMHL begins next weekend when Cupar and Drake start play in the second round of Provincial 'A'. Bethune begins play in Provincial 'B' against Rosetown next weekend.
In League play you will note these last few games have moved around. Please follow the schedule on this site for up to date dates for the remaining games. Wynyard and Semans was scheduled for Tuesday evening and has been moved to next week. On Wednesday evening the Cupar Canucks will be in Southey to play the Marlins. We have shown the four person refereeing system in most arenas this year but for the second time this year we will have two Referees and one linesman for this game. This system is used in Midget AAA and there is a better possibilty of this kind of system being used in future Senior play than the four person system. Also on Wednesday evening the Strasbourg Maroons play their last game of the season in Avonlea against the Arrows. On Friday evening the Avonlea Arrows will be in Semans and the Lumsden Monarchs play their last regular season game in Wynyard against their namesake. On Saturday evening Southey Marlins are in Avonlea and the Cupar Canucks are in Bethune. The following week there are four make up games that will be played.
Barry has the latest statistics posted. We can't give enough thanks for all of the information Barry keeps in the archives and his passion for statistics. All Star nominations will be completed in the next week and we will post those for you to peruse. Details are not finalized for this year's All Star Banquet.

The 7th place Avonlea Arrows (5-5-1) get back into action and host the 8th place Lumsden Monarchs (5-10-0), the 4th place Semans Wheat Kings (6-5-1) are in Cupar to play the 6th place Canucks (5-4-2), the Bethune Bulldogs (6-7-1) are in Strasbourg to play the Maroons (2-13-0) and the 3rd place Southey Marlins (6-5-2) are in Wynyard to play the 2nd place Monarchs (11-1-1). We apologize for the cancellation of the two games on Saturday evening. The League made an attempt this year to keep as much room open for Senior ‘A’ Provincials (these are best of 3 series) for the four teams we have in that classification and we lowered our regular season games to 18 however there were still problems fitting the games in. If you go to our schedule you will note that two games are on the bottom of the schedule and those games will be rescheduled this week. Provincials start this weekend. Our Provincial schedule for the HHL teams is available by clicking on the “2011 SHA Provincials” button on the right side of this page under “HHL Headlines”. November 22 Action resumed on Friday evening as the Lumsden Monarchs played their first game of the year at home against the Avonlea Arrows. The Monarchs won 4-1. Avonlea was playing with a shorter bench for this game but still had plenty of chances to score in this game if not for the play of winning goalie Trevor Thiessen who stopped 28 shots. At the other end of the ice Justin Mrazek did all he could to keep his team in the game stopping 39 of 42 shots. Lumsden’s scoring came from Austin Preete in the first period, Brett Matlock in the second period and Riley Agopsowich in the third. Gavin Mievre scored a power play goal with just under three minutes to go and Lumsden finished with an empty net goal from Brett Matlock. In Cupar the Canucks hosted the Bethune Bulldogs who were also playing their first game of the year. If you wanted scoring this was the game to be at. The Canucks powered their way to a 9-6 win. It was 3-3 after one and 7-5 Cupar after two periods. Despite tweleve minor penalties to Bethune and six for Cupar each team only scored one power play goal. The trio of Ryan Bahan, Tyson Sievert and Tyler Stewart each scored two goals for the Canucks. Tyson Melnychuk, Donovan Chow and Davis Brown also scored for the Canucks. Bethune scoring came from Dustin McAngus who had two goals and from Kayne Ulmer, Tyler Van Luven, Tyler Riche and Trevor Shier. All four goalies played in this game. Cupar’s Tyler Roberts picked up the win and played until the first minute of the third period allowing six goals. Brett Thomas went the rest of the way without allowing another goal. The other game Friday evening featured our League Champion Southey Marlins playing their first game of the year in Strasbourg for the Maroons home opener. The Maroons stayed close but the Marlins pulled out a 7-5 victory. Penalties were a problem for the Maroons as they had 15 minor penalties and the Marlins took advantage of that with four power play goals. The Maroons had one power play goal in the third during a 5 minute power play. Kane Ludwar scored twice for the Marlins with the rest of the scoring coming from Curtis Markewich, Kyle Ermel, Hubick Mackenzie, Derek Halldorson and Brendan Jasper. Halldorson was part of the scoring for all four PP goals and ended the evening with five points.. Maroons scoring came from Derek Back and Casey Heintz with two goals each and a power play marker from John Davis. Tyler Kifferling took the loss for the Maroons while Ryan Senft picked up his first win for the Marlins. On Saturday evening we had three more games on the schedule. The Bulldogs got scoring from Kayne Ulmer, Ryan Fishley and Tyler Van Luven. The Bulldogs took seven more minor penalties in the next two periods but held on until Jeremy Forbes scored with just over three minutes left in the game. Ryan Siebel picked up the win for the Bulldogs while Mitch Wintonyk took the loss for the Monarchs. Avonlea Arrows played their home opener against the red hot Cupar Canucks. This game also went to overtime and the Arrows pulled out their first win of the year with 6-5 victory. This was certainly an interesting way to get to overtime as the Arrows scored five times in the first period. This included short handed goals from Gavin Mievre and two power play goals on the only two chances they had from Calvin Watson and Gavin Mievre. Mievre completed the hat trick with another goal and Sean Miller also scored. There was no scoring in the second period and then the Canucks struck with five goals in the third period. Tyson Sievert picked up a hat trick, including the game tying goal with just over a minute to go. Tyler Wilyman and Tyler Stewart also scored. Three minutes into overtime Calvin Watson scored the winner for the Arrows. League MVP Justin Mrazek picked up the win for the Arrows and Brett Thomas was in net for the Canucks. Our last game of the weekend pitted one of the oldest rivalries anywhere as the Semans Wheat Kings opened up the season in Raymore. The Wheat Kings opened up the scoring on a power play goal from Denny Joyal but the Rockets replied quickly on a goal from Colin Herman. The Rockets then took the lead for good on a goal from Josh Belair. In the second period Ryan Cruse and Tyrell Shulko scored for the Rockets and Joey MacDonald scored for the Wheat Kings. Shulko picked up his second goal of the game in the third and Joel Humphries finished the scoring for the Wheat Kings to make the final score 5-3 for the Rockets.
